STAR WARS - THE MEANING OF ALL LIGHTSABER COLORS -

Alexander Kleinofen

In the Star Wars universe, the most common lightsaber colors are blue, red, and green, which fundamentally contribute to distinguishing the light and dark sides of the Force. Like many other objects in this world, the different lightsaber colors have their own meaning and are used by different Force users.

Lightsabers consist of a plasma blade generated by a kyber crystal. These crystals are rare and found only on a few planets. Originally colorless, in the hands of a Force user, the crystals take on a color that aligns with the character of their wielder.

Blue lightsabers

Blue is one of the most classic colors and closely associated with the Jedi. This color represents justice and valor, which also corresponds to the ideals of the Jedi Order. Jedi such as Obi-Wan Kenobi , Anakin Skywalker, and Aayla Secura carried blue lightsabers. In Star Wars Legends, blue was often used by Jedi Guardians, who acted as a kind of executive branch and fought against the dark side of the Force.

Red lightsabers

Red is the color of the Sith and represents the dark side of the Force. Famous Sith such as Darth Vader, Count Dooku, and Darth Maul carried red lightsabers. In Star Wars Legends, Sith had to create their own synthetic crystals because they didn't have access to natural kyber crystals. These synthetic crystals naturally glowed red. In the new canon, however, the Sith must steal crystals from the Jedi and dye them red through a process called "bleeding." In this process, the Sith transfers all of their negative emotions onto the crystal, changing its color.

White lightsabers

White lightsabers are very rare and only appear in special cases. Ahsoka Tano wore white lightsabers after purifying an Inquisitor's red crystals. Through a special ritual, she was able to "cure" the crystals of the dark side of the Force, resulting in their white color. The white color symbolizes neutrality and Ahsoka's independent status, as she is neither a Jedi nor a Sith.

Green lightsabers

Green lightsabers are the second most common lightsaber color among the Jedi. They are often wielded by wise and spiritual Jedi such as Qui-Gon Jinn, Yoda, and Luke Skywalker. Jedi with green blades tend to rely more heavily on their connection to the Force and diplomacy rather than direct sword combat.

Mace Windu Lightsaber Purple

Purple lightsabers

Purple lightsabers are extremely rare, and the most famous example is Mace Windu's. This color holds special significance in the expanded universe, as it represents a mixture of blue (light) and red (dark). This suggests a balance between the two sides of the Force, symbolizing Mace Windu's exceptional fighting style. In the real world, however, the color purple was primarily used because it was the favorite color of actor Samuel L. Jackson.

Rey Yellow

Yellow lightsabers

Yellow lightsabers have gained popularity, especially in recent years. Jedi Guardians trained to guard the Jedi Temple and special locations often carried yellow blades in Star Wars Legends. In current canon, Rey is the most famous character with a yellow lightsaber, which she uses at the end of the Skywalker Saga. The Temple Guards from "The Clone Wars" also carried yellow lightsabers, as did Asajj Ventress after she left the path of the Sith.

Darksword

The Black Darkblade is a unique weapon created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian in the Jedi Order.

It has a sword-like shape and a shorter blade than regular lightsabers. After Vizsla's death, the Darkblade was kept in the Jedi Temple, but was later stolen by his clan. During the Empire, the weapon served as a symbol of power among the Mandalorians.

New lightsaber colors in the High Republic

In the new era of the "High Republic," set approximately 200 years before the Clone Wars, many new lightsaber colors are introduced into the canon, including orange, cyan, magenta, and indigo. These colors had previously appeared in some Star Wars media but were only now officially incorporated into the canon. This era also reveals that black lightsabers were not uncommon at the time.

The High Republic represents a time of peace and expansion for the Republic. It's an era in which the Jedi are at the height of their power and new stories are told in the Star Wars universe. The introduction of new lightsaber colors in this era demonstrates how diverse and deep the universe can continue to be.

Other lightsaber colors

In the expanded Star Wars universe, especially in Legends, there are other lightsaber colors that are not yet officially represented in the current canon. These include silver, gold, and transparent blades. It remains to be seen whether these colors will be reinstated in the official canon in the future.

In summary, the different lightsaber colors in the Star Wars universe have deeper meanings and are often connected to the personality and beliefs of the wielder. Blue, red, and green are the most recognizable, symbolizing the light and dark sides of the Force, respectively, but there are many more colors that have unique meanings and backgrounds.
